Horses & Questions

26/2/2019

Hi everyone!

After my last project I took a day off due to health reasons, just something that happens with my pain that I have no choice over. Anyway all is fine again now.
I was going to draw a wolf for my next project, however after testing myself with a number of projects I wanted to do something that I love doing, and that is a horse.
So I spent about 3 hours online looking through certain websites that provide reference photographs for people like me,  so we can use them to create artwork from.
I had quite a few pictures that I really liked, however there was one that stood out for me, it was a Skewbald (white with chestnut or brown patches) horse stood looking over a fence with another horse at his side.
He had such a pretty face! However, because I don't have my full collection of colours yet in my coloured pencils I knew I didn't have the right colour to recreate the chestnut colour, but that wasn't going to stop me.
I drew out the horse, as accurately as I could regarding his markings etc. then I made an attempt at trying to recreate the chestnut markings. Sadly I just didn't get it quite right and wasn't happy with the outcome, so I've gone over what colour I did lay down and made him a dark brown Skewbald instead. I've not finished him just yet, and still have quite a lot of work to do on him however I'm really enjoying this and am going to do another horse after him I think.
What I do hope to achieve is to speak with some other equine artists and find out what colours they use and in what order they use them to get the right chestnut colour. I am determined to get it right as I just adore chestnuts, and I have a horse from my past who was very very special to me ad I want to draw in the future to frame and put in my art studio. I also want to have a print made of her to frame and gift to someone who has always been a special friend to me.

I will post up a photograph of him so far to show you how he looks partly done, and once I've finished him I'll post up the final result in my gallery with the details of what I used to create him.
I hope you like him so far, i certainly do, I think he's so handsome, I just adore his face. What I do need to do between this picture and the next is just practice drawing eyes of horses.

I do have a huge decision to make, I can't decide whether or not to become an equine artist or an animal artist. I know limiting myself to just equine art limits my request for work but I'm in this most importantly for the enjoyment of creating my art and if I get the requests I'd be happy to send my work global if it turns out to be good enough. However, seeing some of the equine artists I follow on my facebook and instagram page, I've got a long way to go before my work will be good enough, but I am going to work as hard as I can to become that good.
So I hope you enjoy my picture so far, if anyone has any suggestions for a name for this picture please do let me know below, I'd love to hear from you!

My other thought that I've had is, I'm thinking about running a small competition. I know my artwork is nowhere near as special as some peoples on the internet, however its very special to me and I put in just as much hard-work as anyone who loves to create art does. So though my work is not as good as many artists out there, I do think someone out there would enjoy a piece of my art, and if they don't then don't enter I guess lol.
Let me know what you guys thing about this too. I will probably just do a piece that i like then put that up for someone to win an original piece from me, done very early in my art career.

Take care all.

Be Happy & Keep Creating!
