Dachshund & Dee Update
Hi DeeDackelsArt Followers! (I think you need a better name 😀)
So things have been a bit quiet lately after my last disaster post as I've been working on a piece that is for someone else so I can't share that.
However I've had a week in bed with flu so I took that time to work on my dachshund. I was limited on time as working for more than an hour at a time would really hurt my head so in the first few days I didn't get much done. Today however and some of yesterday I was able to do much more and he's really moving on now.
Working with soft pastels is not for everyone, they can be, no I'll correct that, they're very messy to work with, not just the fact they get all over your hands, face & clothes but the dust from them gets everywhere, I have to wipe my desk daily because otherwise it would get all over my art board too.
Anyway, on my last update of the dachshund I'd got quite a bit of base coat down and the first attempt at his eyes done. Since then I've completed his eyes making a few changes to make them come to life more and I've now got a full base coat down and a second layer of colour. I've now got to the point where I'm adding detail which will be the final step in this piece.
The base that I've drawn him on is Pastelmat and it's quite a dark blue that I'm using, which does make it hard to make the colours sit right on the paper and I did find that a challenge, but I've got that sorted and hope to finish him very soon.
I've just placed an order for some new pastel pencils, my no.1 go to is Stabilo Carbothellos and Faber-Castell Pitt Pencils (pastels), but I've ordered one from another manufacturer too and when it arrives I'll let you know the full name and how I feel about it, the carbothellos are very different from the Faber-Castell's, but the Derwent Pastel pencils are in-between though more toward the Carbothellos, though I don't use them near as much. As for soft pastels I love the Unison Colour Soft Pastels, they are just a joy to work with, though at the moment I don't have many as it's about cost, but I've not really used many other soft pastels, I do have some half stick pastels from Jackson's Art which are nice to use, their colours are great to use and I've used a few of them in the commission I'm currently doing, but I would like to try their soft pastels that look very much like Unison Colour Pastels, but that will be something to do in the future.
I do have a great stack of pastels and pastel pencils on hold for me, but until I have £300 to be able to pay for them their stuck with their current owner who no longer uses that medium. So if anyone wants to treat me 😉 I'm getting kind of desperate for pastel materials to be able to keep working 🤞
So that aside, here's my little dachshund, who is about three quarters done now. Hope you like him 😁
Take care all
